Some candle safety tips...

Posted on Friday, March 23, 2012

(These tips are directed towards Soy candles, because those are the type I am planning on making, but the tips are good for other types of candles as well.)
  • Keep wick trimmed to 1/4" at all times. (This ensures even burning and prevents the flame from becoming to big.)
  • Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Burn candles within sight.  Never leave burning candles unattended!
  • Always burn candles on a stable, heat resistant surface.
  • Discard any ribbon, twine, tags or other decoration before burning the candle. (Never pick up a candle by the lid, they are used for decorative and covering purposes only.)
  • Extinguish the flame if it becomes to close to the side of your container. (Never use the lid to extinguish a candle.)
  • Keep candles away from drafts or air vents. (Keep candles away from anything that can potentially catch fire.)
  • Do not touch or move candles when they are lit or when the wax is melted. (Remember, the containers can become very hot!)
  • Don't burn candles more than 4 hours.
  • Keep wax free of wick trimmings, matches or any other flammable material.
  • Burn soy candles in a well ventilated room.
  • Don't burn candles when there is a 1/2" or less of wax on the bottom of the container.
  • Put out the candle if it smokes or if the flame becomes larger than 1".  Let the candle stand for at least an hour to cool, then trim the wick and re-light.
  • To discard extra wax, pour it into a trash can or similar container. (Never pour wax down the drain!)
